Grab Medan | Fabulous 99k Airport Transfer, Better Than Taxis & Uber

Grab Medan | Fabulous 99k Airport Transfer, Better Than Taxis & Uber

If you’re looking for the most convenient and cheapest way to move about in Medan, look no further than your phone and the app Grab.  Medan is a fabulous city for an urban weekend getaway, with tons to see and lots to do (and eat!) as you’ll see coming up in my new Medan Guide video.  It sits between the Malacca Strait and the Indian Ocean on the island of North Sumatra in Indonesia.  Please do watch my full Medan Travel Guide video as I was there for 3 days and used Grab almost exclusively and loved it.  The airport transfers were only 99k Rupiah each way, which was less than half what the official airport taxi quoted me.  It’s also about the same cost as the rail option, so why go through the hassle of lugging your bags and travelling back and forth to the station when you can go from door-to-door with Grab?

I’ve been a huge fan of Grab since I first moved to Malaysia in early 2016:

  • I use their service Grab Car instead of taxis daily in Kuala Lumpur
  • I’ve used their drivers when travelling in Singapore
  • And I used Grab Car in Bali instead of taxis or Uber exclusively during a month of reviews there. From the airport to Jimbaran, in and around Seminyak, from the Sheraton in Kuta to Ubud, and from The Mulia near Uluwatu to the ferry port in Padangbai. They offer the cheapest rides to and and from Denpasar’s International airport and their drivers are kind and keep new, well-maintained vehicles.

Get Grab

To download the app, either scan the QR code above or choose the link to your phone’s store from their website.

Definitely download Grab from home so you know it’s on your phone and working when you arrive.  Then buy your Indonesia SIM card outside the airport (see my guide video for buying your sim here) but DO NOT change your phone number in the account settings … simply be sure to always share your local # with the driver in the ‘notes to driver’ area.
