If you’re headed to Koh Samui, you’re in for quite a flawless and special travel experience. I flew out from Kuala Lumpur but chances are very good that you’ll also be flying on Bangkok Airways, Thailand’s premier boutique airline! The airport itself was actually built by Bangkok Airways a couple of decades back and up until a few years ago they were the only carrier flying in and out of it (which is understandable, given the huge investment they made to build an airport on the island). Now several carriers count Koh Samui on their routes but I would highly recommend the original! Bangkok Airways flies on-time, they serve complimentary hot meals in economy, and they even provide free snacks and beverages for travellers in their designated Koh Samui boarding area.
The airport is charming and cute, the service level is exceptional, they have created a village feel to the departure zone, and there’s a cool bar with a tiki hut vibe. Check it out at the end of the video!
PRO TIP >> book your flight in advance!
For many other destinations in Asia you can purchase your ticket a day or two ahead of time and still pay a similar fare to the advance purchase price. However, that is not the case with Samui flights. I had planned to visit months ago but the ticket price literally increased 3x overnight so I pushed my dates and ended up spending my birthday on Koh Samui, which was absolutely perfect in the end.
Koh Samui International Airport
The Koh Samui airport itself is seriously the coolest small airport I’ve ever travelled through. Bangkok Airways departure lounge is separate from the other airlines (and I’m guessing more swank), and it feels like a chilled beach hut in many ways. The efficiency and service level is top notch, they even have free snacks for economy guests. Yes okay, it’s hella-tiny so of course it’s not a place for mega shopping or gearing up on electronics. But it feels like the perfect end to a lovely holiday. I even enjoyed a mean (ehem, 60ml of rum) mojito while waiting for my flight … which departed right on time just like my outbound flight from Kuala Lumpur.
