The island of Borneo is home to endless kilometres of rugged, natural coastline and Miri Marriott Resort & Spa sits on a lovely stretch of it on the South China Sea. I had a great time speaking with locals and learning about the culture in Sarawak and exploring Miri’s night market and street food while I was there, which added to my trip. Don’t miss a chance to stay in their gorgeous sister property Mulu Marriott Resort & Spa, deep inside the rain forest bordering the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Gunung Mulu National Park.
Why You’ll Love it
- New Garden Rooms! The property has just opened the first wing of its renovations and their modern and bright Garden Rooms are perfect for business or leisure travellers.
- Seaside Swing! I had a great time watching the sunset from a fun-filled swing while listening to the sound of the waves. It was a perfect happy hour spot for a solo traveller! I took a bottle of Tiger there one evening and a glass of wine the next 🙂
- Mandara Spa! It was the first spa room I’ve had with a private garden that featured a lounge bed and outdoor bathtub … and I loved it. I had an Indonesian therapist who was truly skilled and I only wish I could have spent more time there.
Please note: as you’ll see in the video, while I found the property lovely (and adored the spa!), it feels like they currently lack a GM because quality levels aren’t close to 5-star standards (and the only other time I’ve seen this was on Bali this year in a Starwood property that had lacked a GM for 10 months). I do recommend this hotel but go into it with a 4-star mentality and don’t expect much/any attention to detail.
